Who are they?

images (1)

The genius in love with you,
the jock you had a thing for?
The vanilla scented drama queen,
the quiet, lonely, plain girl?
The bully of the neighborhood,
the kind-hearted philanthropist?

The leader, a great orator;
his short-sighted martyr?
The dictator, the king,
the slaves of the world?
The good, the evil,
the real in between?

‘Who are they?’
I ask.
‘Who were they?’
I implored.

‘Beating hearts,
lungs contracting,
Just people.’

A/n: The image is of a painting titled “Netherlandish Proverbs” by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. It was created in 1559. This painting is also known as ‘The Topsy Turvy World’, 😉 and in many ways fits perfectly with some of the concepts behind my humble little blog.

Also, I would just like to thank you all for reading my silly little poems and leaving behind such lovely comments. You guys are awesome! 🙂 Thank you so much! 🙂

You are right, “just people”. On dictators, it is both fascinating and horrifying that it was remarked of the Nazi war criminals, tried at Nuremberg that they where “ordinary”, “unremarkable” men but ordinary men (and women) can commit acts of great barbarity.

I always believed that people were never good or bad. They are essentially just people, who are capable of doing great things or horrible things… So, in some ways, the Nazi war criminals could be considered ordinary, unremarkable people who did extraordinarily horrifying things.

I think that people are incredibly complex. A few people are (or at least behave as though they are) wholly good or evil. However most people are a mixture of good and bad. The torturer may leave his work, go home and play with his children, hug his partner whom he loves very much etc. Obviously this doesn’t mitigate his evil actions but it does demonstrate that people are complex.

I enjoyed your poem, very witty and flowing nicely. I do think that some people are just bad. However, we don’t know that until they’ve committed horrible crimes.

      Thank you so much!
I suppose at the end of the day, it is all about perception. 🙂
